Abstract

MATOS, José Manuel. The development of the professional knowledge of the teacher of mathematics in the Portuguese Normal Higher Schools (1911-1930). Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.3, pp.666-683. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v16n3-2017-7.

Escolas Normais Superiores (Higher Normal Schools) created in 1911 play a central role in the formation of mathematics teachers for Portuguese secondary schools. For the first time at this level, their curricular organization will foster reflections on school mathematics and methods for teaching the discipline. The course also includes an accompanying practice. Centered on dissertations produced by the trainees at the end of the programme, this paper seeks to analyze the contribution of these schools’ curricula to the development of professional knowledge of teachers of mathematics in secondary education.
