Abstract

BEIRAL, Josilandia de Oliveira; MARTINEZ, Silvia Alicia  and  OLIVEIRA, Fernando José Luna de. Establishing a physics teaching laboratory at the Humanities Liceum of Campos (1895-1920): an analysis of some material remains. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.3, pp.770-787. We present a study about one of the most important teaching institutions in 19th-century Brazil, which was the Humanities Liceum of Campos, in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, located 250 km to the north of Rio de Janeiro. The research focussed on the analysis of the period of implementation of the physical sciences teaching laboratory in late nineteenth and early twentieth century (during which science education was more prominent due to events occurring on the world stage) and also on the identification of some of the laboratory equipment. We analyzed a number of documents still found in the Liceum, such as letters, photographs and purchase receipts, as well as the pieces of equipment employed in the physics teaching laboratory, many of which can be understood as material remains. The study of the documents pertaining to the implementation of the laboratory and the identification of the surviving equipment provided considerable knowledge about the fundamentals and practices of the teaching of physics during that time.
