The research on school material became relevant in the field of history of education in Brazil, including the one on schoolbooks. Knowing about this relevance, this work is aimed at analyzing the books Principios elementares de musica (1869) and Noções de musica (1902) by Domingos Perdigão and Antonio Rayol respectively, from Maranhão. Bibliographic research is used, prioritizing authors that deal with the theme, such as Bittencourt (2008) and Chopin (2002), and documentary research in official documents and newspapers. The analysis of these works took into account the contents selected, the form of presentation, the public and the purposes for which they were intended. The contents approached by the authors correspond to the elements of the traditional musical spelling, presenting illustrations only in the book of Perdigão. Such works had as target audience the students of these authors in schools of São Luís.
