Abstract

The paper describes the accomplishments of a select number of scholars who advanced the cause of the History of Education in the United State. From 1830 to the present, the evolution of this field of inquiry was influenced by the ideas and actions of celebrated professionals who contributed in a different ways and at different moments in the country’s past. Some of the specialists established the History of Education as a viable subject for study, or contributed to the teaching of educational history in advanced degree and educator preparation programs. Others encouraged and supported disciplined research in the area, or facilitated the dissemination of research findings through publications and professional venues. This narrative discusses the field of Educational History within the context of its teaching and research traditions. It highlights the contributions of individuals, and institutions. that defined and expanded this domain of knowledge and the role that education played in the development of American Society.
