Abstract

MELO, Carolina Silva Bandeira de  and  GUTIERREZ, Laurent. The master's promise: psychometrics as an essential tool for the development of educational practices and for the construction of an experimental clinical pedagogy. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2023, vol.22, e156.  Epub Aug 07, 2023. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v22-2023-156.

In the late 1920s, Théodore Simon was considered one of the best French specialists in the special education. However, its role has been minimized in the historiography of education and psychology. By analyzing his trajectory as an asylum doctor and his contribution to the development and dissemination of intelligence tests, we highlight the originality of his approach and proposals. Our work on archives now allows us to better understand the reasons why tests were used more abroad than in France. Its use in schools and teacher training centers in Minas Gerais attests to this paradox, as Théodore Simon himself observed during his stay in Brazil in 1929. This trip is yet another opportunity to highlight the importance of transnational research and show how psychometry has followed the history of the special education.
