Abstract

CHARTIER, Anne-Marie. A History of Education without Jules Ferry. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2024, vol.23, e2024-51.  Epub Mar 17, 2025. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v23-e2024-51.

Acknowledging the scarcity of articles on education in France prior to the Third Republic, this article takes stock of the evolution of research since the 1970s, and examines the reasons why educational issues have disappeared from generalist history journals, in favor of a "vulgate" promoted by specialists in the History of Education, which converges approaches around the emblematic figure of Ferry, the foundation of a French school in crisis today. Four studies by historians focus on the Ancien Régime, two on elite education (16th-century school notebooks by C. Bénévent and X. Bisaro and the birth of competitive examinations in Europe before the Revolution by D. Julia) and two on village education (on the maître-chantre by X. Bisaro and on the rural school before and during the Revolution by C. Simien), renew issues concerning the history of schooling, the hierarchy of knowledge and the relationship between training and professionalism.

Keywords : School; School notebooks; Competitions; School knowledge.
