Abstract

DONOSCO-VASQUEZ, Trinidad. Empower the elites? A reflection on the empowerment of university women. Rev. Reflex [online]. 2018, vol.26, n.2, pp.182-202.  Epub Sep 16, 2019. ISSN 1982-9949.  https://doi.org/10.17058/rea.v26i2.11802.

This article presents the thesis that the genesis and essence of empowerment is linked to vulnerable groups with great difficulties in the access of resources and the power and that, therefore, it seems incompatible with the university sector that represents the elite of the education system and it is also incompatible with the empowerment of women in higher education. After developing some experiences of empowering women in universities and reviewing the keys to empowerment, we made a list of the discourses that bend and discriminate against women in the university sector. Finally, the characteristics of how it should be and what should be considered for a process of empowerment in the university are established.
