This study has its focus on the work of reading texts in a school environment, specifically in Elementary School II. It aims to report and to analyze the application of a reference matrix of reading skills and abilities as a pedagogical support to help Portuguese language teachers of this cycle of education, to diagnose in their students relevant reading skills that need to be developed, in order to make of students more proficient readers. The theoretical framework conceives reading in a cognitive and socio- inter-rational perspective (Solé, 1998; KLEIMAN, 2006; KOCH, ELIAS, 2012, SOUZA, 2016) and the school teaching by competences (BONAMINO, 2002; MACEDO, 2005; ZABALA, 2010). The research is basically characterized as field, bibliographic, descriptive, experimental and analytical and was carried out in 2016 with teachers and students of a private school in the city of Londrina. The results demonstrated, through empirical evidence, the contribution of the proposal to the diagnosis and improvement of student reading competence.
