Abstract

MESQUITA, Silvana Soares de Araujo. High school teachers: working conditions and characteristics formation of a professional category silenced. Ensino em Re-Vista [online]. 2020, vol.27, n.1, pp.302-332.  Epub Mar 27, 2020. ISSN 1983-1730.  https://doi.org/10.14393/er-v27n1a2020-13.

This paper investigates the high school teacher, trying to identify the specificities of this professional category regarding the training and working conditions. It results from qualitative research, developed in a public school of the state network, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Questionnaires were applied to 69 teachers and interviews were conducted, as well as field observations. Dialogue with national and international research on high school and training (Oliveira, Costa, Kuenzer, Gatti, Dubet, Nóvoa and Formosinho). The text is structured in three parts: Working Conditions_a framework of intensification; Gender relations and length of service_ the “tension” between heterogeneous groups; Teacher education_ multiple influences and representations. It is concluded that the working conditions and training of these teachers need to be rethought, to overcome the own organizational and temporal logic of high school and the expected professional status, aiming at the professional development of this teaching category.

Keywords : Teacher training; High School Teacher; Work conditions.
