The text develops as an essay elaborated from an exploratory research on the production of knowledge in digital manufacturing laboratories installed in universities and understood from the assumptions of culture maker, the mobilization of knowledge and neoliberalism. The objective is to analyze critically the makerspaces considering their political aspect, which is strained by the intensification of contradictions in neoliberalism that restricts public spaces. The qualitative study was based on the analysis of public information on the implementation of digital manufacturing laboratories in Brazilian universities, visits to some of these laboratories, interviews with participants of these laboratories, personal experience of one of the authors, in the implantation of a laboratory of manufacturing maker and, finally, analysis of bibliographical references on culture maker, knowledge mobilization, digital manufacturing laboratories and neoliberalism. The dynamics of cooperation between individuals and the own way of knowledge management in the maker spaces, points to the hypothesis that this mode of production of knowledge produces open, public and democratic knowledge, processes linked, in this case, to the public use of technological resources. From the perspective of the mobilization of knowledge the analyzes point to possibilities that go beyond the curricular aspects in higher education, indicating a way of applying the maker philosophy in the production of knowledge, which refers to the relationship between the university and society. However, such possibilities must face the limits imposed by neoliberalism, that restricts the public sphere, democracy and politics, perspectives present in the proposal maker.
