Abstract

HADDAD, Lenira. THE USE OF FILMS TO OBTAIN UNDERSTANDINGS ON PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: TWO METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES. Eccos Rev. Cient. [online]. 2019, n.50, e14016.  Epub Jan 27, 2024. ISSN 1983-9278.  https://doi.org/10.5585/eccos.n50.14016.

This article presents two methodological approaches to qualitative research that use films to obtain insights about the pedagogical practice of early childhood education. One refers to visual and multivocal ethnography developed by Tobin and colleagues, which gave rise to the classic work Pre-school in three cultures: Japan, China and the United States (1989); other, less well-known, is SOPHOS, an acronym for the Second Order Phenomenological Observation Scheme, developed and tested by two Danes: Hensen and Jensen (2004) for a European transnational research portrayed in a book by Cameron and Moss (2007). Although SOPHOS is inspired by Tobin’s research, it presents substantive differences as to the objectives pursued. These differences and their epistemological and methodological implications are discussed and illustrated through the description of their research.

Keywords : Early Childhood Education; Visual and Multivocal Ethnography; Films; Pedagogical Practices; Sophos; Tobin..
