TODARO, Mônica de Ávila  e  CARVALHO, Alesandra Cristina de. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AND RACIAL RELATIONS: A LOOK AT CONTEMPORARY BOOKS. Eccos Rev. Cient. [online]. 2023, n.66, e25026.  Epub 19-Fev-2024. ISSN 1983-9278.  https://doi.org/10.5585/eccos.n66.25026.

This article aims to look at the works available in the publishing market in order to understand the scenario of children's literature books that feature black characters and/or Afro-Brazilian and African cultures and histories. The Law 10.639/03 brought important milestones for Brazilian basic education and may also influence the production of children's literature. The question that guided our research was: how are works of children's literature with black characters and African-Brazilian and African cultures and histories presented in the publishing market? We analyzed, qualitatively and quantitatively, the catalogs of two bookstores and eleven publishers of children's literature. The bookstores and publishers selected were: Cultura, Saraiva, Ática, Companhia das Letrinhas, DCL, FTD, Paulinas, Salamandra e Scipione, Mazza, Pallas and SM. As a theoretical foundation, we brought the contributions of Araujo and Dias (2019) to ethnic-racial relations in Children's Literature; of Gomes (2012) for ethnic-racial relations; and Freire's ideas (2006) about Education and Reading of the world. We conclude that there is a small number of works of children's literature that address race relations when compared to the total number of books aimed at children. We also note that there is still a long way to go when it comes to age and gender issues.
