Abstract

The present text portrays the founding history of the Institute of Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1894, by Mother Clélia Merloni, in Italy. The aim is to discuss the historical determinants of the pedagogical action undertaken by the congregation in Brazil, especially in the state of Paraná. This is a bibliographic research that presents, at first, general aspects of the life and apostolic work of Clélia Merloni. Then, it presents the creation of the Institute of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, parallel to the examination of the historical events that impelled the expansion of its missionary actions to different regions of the world. In addition, the work discusses the Institute's performance in the Brazilian context at the dawn of the 20th century. At last, the text presents and analyzes the educational principles and guiding values of the work of the apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the area of Education in the country. The work undertaken by the Apostle Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus consists of an efficient strategy to promote Christian educational assistance through the school training of children and young people from the wealthiest families, especially the girls.
