Inspired by Matthew Lipman's Philosophy for Children program, Walter Kohan's Philosophy with Children project, developed among other philosophers and educators from all over the South American continent, understands philosophy as a thinking process that modifies the lives of those who practice it, and which produces open spaces within schools where individuals can reflect about their own thinking mechanisms, so as to define who they want to be. Philosophy appears as an invitation to teachers and students to strengthen their own autonomy and to broaden their freedom. This paper identifies autonomy as a central issue in the Philosophy with Children movement, and focuses on that concept as it was developed by the Greek-French author, Cornelius Castoriadis, who argues that the development of autonomy necessarily requires the construction of an inquiring and selfmanaging community. We explore this claim further by discussing Michel Foucault´s notion of power, Humberto Maturana´s reflections on obedience, and Roberto Gómez Bolaño´s well-known Mexican TV series "El Chapulín Colorado," amongst others.
