This study examined the perceptions about passive smoking among elementary school students in a Public School in Santa Maria with the objective of measure the knowledge about this type of pollution and its effects on population’s health and quality of life. The sample of 298 students in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades with ages ranging between 10 and 15 years. The instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured questionnaire. The methodology used to interpret the data was the analysis of Content. The results showed that most students (78.18%) associate the term “passive smoking” to the binomial health/disease and/or life/death; 57.71% of students associate with the term cigarette and smoke; nevertheless the collected data indicate that the perceptions concerning the theme are mismatched and not well defined, a fact that requires further investigation. The understanding of the harmful effects of passive smoking to the biological system requires of Education in Science alternatives in education that should include the toxic effects of that on cells and tissues. Considering the importance of passive smoking as a causative agent of disease it becomes important to know the prior perceptions aiming to contribute in the implementation of socio-educational policies that contribute to stop this kind of environmental pollution. Here science education can help students to build a citizenship dedicated to health and the quality of life.
