Resumen

OLIVEIRA, Caio Rudá de. From the Studium Generale to globalized higher education systems: a review of the mission of university. Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2019, vol.44, e32784.  Epub 11-Nov-2020. ISSN 1984-6444.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984644432784.

Higher Education as we know it nowadays is the result of a historical process of institutionalization of knowledge that began around the 11th to 13th centuries, when the first corporations of teachers and students began to emerge in Europe. These groups, traditionally referred to as the pioneers of Bologna and Paris, have evolved over the last centuries of the Middle Ages until they have acquired the university form.

The paper presents the evolution of the university idea from medieval times to the present day, by focusing on the role it has been playing in its relation to societies. Relying on the view of important thinkers of the university theme, it seeks to expose the shift from an exclusively idea of teaching and training to the research, extension and services to society missions, within a process of convergences and contradictions that make up the field of higher education in a global age.

Palabras clave : University; Mission; Globalization.
