Abstract

SILVA, Maria Rute Depoi da; ZUCOLOTTO, Marcele Pereira da Rosa  and  ZANELLA, Diego Carlos. Humanities and high school as a democratic space. Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2020, vol.45, e38252.  Epub July 18, 2023. ISSN 1984-6444.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984644438252.

This theoretical study intends to address some reflections on the importance of teaching of humanities to the School of secondary education to constitute a fact in a democratic space. Initially, the text emphasizes points of Law No. 13.415/2017, originating from provisional measure No. 746/2016 that reformulates the Brazilian high school and that can represent, among other issues, a threat to the teaching of humanities. In this sense, grounded by Paiva (1987), Aranha (2006) and Libâneo (2012) brings some considerations regarding the history of Brazilian education and its school organization, in order to understand how and with what ideals this space was being built in our Society over the years. In the course of the text, it focuses on defending the humanities as a way for the school to truly be a democratic territory. To this end, it is reported to Rouanet (1987), Saviani (1997), Morais (2014) and especially to some ideas of Nussbaum (2015), which emphasizes the need to prioritize the humanities to enable the option for democracy, pointing to the urgency of a Democratic education. The study also points to the fundamental role of the school with a view to the democratic context and how much, with the contribution of the humanities, can contribute to the formation of citizens truly committed to building a more just and fraternal society.
