Abstract

CORREA JUNIOR, Roque; VOSGERAU, Dilmeire Sant’Anna Ramos; SILLA JUNIOR, Carlos Nascimento  and  ZOPPO, Beatriz Maria. Music Education in Brazil: historical journey through official documents (1847-2018). Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2023, vol.48, e67345.  Epub Jan 07, 2025. From the period of activity of the Jesuits to the present day, music has been present in the most diverse aspects of social life in Brazil, whether in education, religion or entertainment. Therefore, this documental research aims to understand the social function of music education since the Empire Brazil (1847) until the approval of the final version of the BNCC (2018). 26 official documents available in government repositories were collected. The methodology was based on the assumptions of document analysis, complemented by library procedures and applied to the ATLAS.ti Software. The result of this analysis allowed us to characterize five periods with distinct thematic categories. The first period (1847-1930), whose formation presented an Instrumental/Artistic character; the second period (1931-1960), with a Patriotic/Disciplinary formation; the third period (1961-1971), showed signs of a Human/Social musical education; the period of the military dictatorship (1971-1995), was transitory with the promotion of the polyvalent teacher; on the other hand, the fifth period (1997-2018, and current), presents strong characteristics of a Human/Social formation. It appears that the intention with a Human/Social Training, especially at BNCC, is to bring the student closer to his reality and make his performance as a citizen. Furthermore, it is necessary to discuss these official documents throughout the school community, as many of them do not infer clear and objective interpretations.
