Abstract

ALMEIDA, Rogério de  and  COPPI, Luiz Antonio Callegari. Tragic affirmation and pedagogy of choice in animation Soul. Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2023, vol.48, e66933.  Epub Apr 24, 2025. ISSN 1984-6444.  https://doi.org/10.5902/19846444x66933.

This article aims to analyze, through a hermeneutic reading, the animation Soul, by Pete Docter (2020). In order to do so, we propose two dimensions of analysis: one which is more philosophical and another which is specifically pedagogical. Concerning the philosophical dimension, we investigate how the plot of the film contrasts with the individualistic and productivist imaginary of contemporary times by proposing an affirmation of living without grand, absolute justifications - in other words, a tragic affirmation, as Friedrich Nietzsche and Clément Rosset conceive it. Hence, we have resorted to their works to support our argumentation. Afterwards, we are also interested in observing how, from this dreadful perspective, the pedagogical relationship established by the protagonists of the story illustrates the power of fortuitous encounters in Education, highlighting the notions of experience and choice.

Keywords : Film interpretation; Tragic philosophy; Pedagogy of choice.
