This article presents aspects of the history of education and fills gaps related to the Secondary Education, focusing on issues and problems located in the north of the State of Minas Gerais. The objective of this study is to analyze professor Abgar Renault’s statements about Secondary Education, published in the newspaper Gazeta do Norte in Montes Claros-MG, in the 1950s and 1960s. The choice is due to the importance of this educator, whose academic work goes beyond the limits of Minas Gerais and Brazil. A historiographical research was carried out, in which Gazeta do Norte newspaper was taken as the document. Publications from EscolaSecundária and Revista de Ensino (Minas Gerais) magazines were also considered, to capture the synchrony of the regional movement with the discussions that took place throughout Brazil. It was found that, for professor Abgar Renault, the problems of Secondary Education were considered as symptom of a crisis experienced by Brazilian education, in which the unplanned expansion of enrollments was allied to the lack of qualified teachers. The problems discussed at the local level reflect broader issues of education in Brazil.
