Abstract

ACOSTA, Tassio  and  GALLO, Silvio. Algorithmized childhoods and youths within the context of the corona virus pandemic. Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2024, vol.49, e85039.  Epub Aug 20, 2025. ISSN 1984-6444.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984644485039.

The aim of this article is to analyze childhoods and youths in contemporary times based on the notion of democratic governmentality and what we call here algorithmized childhoods and youths - first identified in the 1988 Brazilian Federal Constitution and later, locked up in their homes throughout the pandemic period. We start from Michel Foucault's analysis of the government of populations as an effect and machinery of biopower capable of producing behaviors and subjectivities. With this in mind, it analyzes how Brazilian legislation has consolidated the notion of childhood and youth as a "stage in the development of newly-conquered citizenship" since the 1988 Federal Constitution. The subjectivation produced during the pandemic of the new coronavirus is problematized, with its consequent social distancing and the need to promote education and socialization on screen, in addition to the possible consequences caused by the situation. This analysis stems from the provocations experienced during the pandemic period and how childhoods and youths, cut off from face-to-face interpersonal relationships, unfolded into other childhoods and youths. Thus, we conclude that the childhoods and youths literate, schooled and socialized on screen are algorithmized childhoods and youths.
