Abstract

VEIGA, Aline Aparecida Souza de Carvalho  and  SILVA, Marta Regina Paulo da. Ethnic-racial relations and pedagogical practices in day care centers: teachers' perceptions. Educação. Santa Maria [online]. 2024, vol.49, e84865.  Epub Aug 29, 2025. ISSN 1984-6444.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984644484865.

The article shares the results of a master's research that aimed to understand how the theme of ethnic-racial relations is worked on in day-care centers in the city of Santo André/SP. This is exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, whose methodological procedures were: documental investigation and conducting focus groups. Data analysis was based on the content analysis method. The theoretical framework dialogued with the social studies of childhood and ethnic-racial relations. The results reveal that the day care centers in that municipality develop specific actions in relation to the theme of ethnic-racial relations, whether in the provision of in-service training, or in the planning carried out by the teachers, not involving everyone in the construction of an education anti-racist, which has consequently the maintenance of racial prejudice and discrimination. Furthermore, there are reports of a pedagogical practice marked by doubts regarding how to include the theme of ethnic-racial relations in the daily life of the day care center and, therefore, assist black children, ensuring them the construction of a positive identity. Pedagogical assistants and teachers show the lack of training on ethnic-racial relations that come from the Secretary of Education of the Municipality, as well as the lack of materials that help in this process. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for investments in more systematic training actions that have intercultural dialogue as a guiding principle.
