The articleaimstoinvestigatehowthreeschools in the interior of Ceará, which serve studentsfrom rural locations, havestimulatedthedevelopmentofcitizenshipandstudentprotagonism. The researchhas as theoreticalandmethodologicalfoundationstheinterpretiveparadigm, thequalitative approach, ofexploratorytype as totheobjectiveandapplied as tothenature. The methodwas a multiple case study, usingsemi-structured interviews with managers, teachers, andstudents. A bibliographicresearchwasalsocarried out to dialogue withthefieldfindings. The resultsobtainedwereworkedfromthecontentanalysisand it wasfoundthatalthoughtheconditionsofaccesstoeducation are ensured, theconditionsofstudents' attendance are permeatedbyvariousdifficulties, fromthephysicalinfrastructureofthebuildings, schooltransportation, teachers, andthattheconditionsoftheexternalcontextassociatedwith social andeconomiclimitationshindertheabilitytochoosetheyoungpeople'sschool path. It wasobservedthatschoolspromote a series ofactions in orderto mobilize studentsandprovidespacesthat favor protagonistattitudesontheirpart, stimulatingtheexerciseofcitizenshipandyouthprotagonism. However, thesituationsobserved in thethreeschoolsthat serve the rural population show thatthepublicauthorities, despitetheirefforts, are notabletoensurethereductionofinequalitiesandthefulfillmentofconstitutionalprecepts in guaranteeingtherighttoqualityeducation.
