Abstract

MARQUES, Marcelo; RIBEIRO, Nayana  and  COLARES, Jeisa. Basketball teaching and the physical space issue: an experience report from a public school in the North. Rev. Motriviv. [online]. 2019, vol.31, n.58, e56328.  Epub Sep 11, 2019. ISSN 2175-8042.  https://doi.org/10.5007/2175-8042.2019e56328.

Basketball demands a better-structured physical space and this seems to be a limiting factor for its development in Brazil public schools. The aim of this study is to report on the practical experience of presenting basketball to seventh-grade students in physical education classes in a public school in the city of Manaus that does not provide adequate space for practice. Four classes (theoretical and practical) addressing basketball were proposed to 36 elementary school students. We found that, despite severe limitations, it is possible to introduce basketball to public school students even without adequate physical space. However, for an ongoing process of learning, it is necessary to provide access to basketball with a dynamic pedagogical proposal, in alignment with the school and the community, indicating that the teacher should be a central agent to tailor adaptations to the social and cultural reality of the school from a critical perspective.
