This study presents actions taken by the military government in the 1960s and 1970s for Physical Education, making it compulsory school discipline at all levels of education, starting with the 1968 University Reform and the Guidelines and Bases Law of 1971. For to understand how this process occurred, we analyzed the policies implemented by the government during the period described, among which we highlight the Campanha Nacional para o Esclarecimento Desportivo, created to promote Physical Education and promote sports practice by the population and the Diagnóstico de Educação Física/Desportos in Brazil, designed to verify the conditions of Physical Education to implement actions that could contribute to the improvement of the physical aspects and the improvement of the quality of life of the population, especially in the school context, enabling a more efficient performance related to the world of work.
