In order to analyze how the scientific production on athletics is available in portuguese, english and spanish under the time frame of 27 years 1990 - 2017, with emphasis on the pedagogical sub-area, we carried out a systematic review subsidized by scientific articles, arranged in 4 databases, Lilacs, Sportsdiscus, Journals/Capes and Scielo. The results and analyses were organized according to the sub-areas of concentration of post graduate programs in Physical Education in Brazil: pedagogical, sociocultural and biodynamic. The studies of the pedagogical sub-area were classified as school physical education and not school physical education. For school physical education, the productions were analyzed under the categorization of intervention, diagnosis/description and grounding. The data revealed the highest incidence in the scientific production allocated to the biodynamic sub-area. In the pedagogical sub-area the largest volume of production is allocated to school physical education under the perspective of intervention studies.
