This article reports on the ten-year trajectory by the Socio-critical Research and Training Group in Physical Education, Sports and Leisure at the University of Brasília (Avante-UnB). To characterize that period, it adresses historical dimensions, the theoretical-methodological approach, and the group’s research agenda, focused on the study of public policies on sports and leisure. The text highlights the group's attempt to reconcile scientific production, staff training and academic activism, which caused changes in its organization and functioning. At the same time, a brief presentation on the epistemological and ontological elements in Marx's method. This theoretical-methodological framework illuminates the research carried out by Avante on the following themes: (i) sports policies during Lula’s and Dilma’s tenures in the Brazilian presidency; (ii) sports policies in the Federal District; (iii) public funding for sports; and (iv) analysis and evaluation of sports policies.
