Analyzes the presence of John Dewey in the Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos, by means of eighty-eight articles that mention the philosopher in the period of 1944 to 1964; the intention is to compose an analytical description of the various ways of mentioning the Deweyan thought in those articles. The articles was classified in three categories, in accordance with the relevance of the name Dewey within the text, in order to understand what aspects of the Deweyan thought - political, philosophical or pedagogical - had been privileged in each article. The discussion was based on the concepts “appropriation” and “re-contextualization” that express the use that an author makes of the ideas of another one, in elaborating the arguments that are to be communicated in defense of the author’s major thesis.
