Abstract

Based on the theoretical perspective of Discourse analysis, combined with studies of rhetoric, the objective of this study is to reflect on the construction of the discursive ethos that spokespersons build in the speech prepared by the Work’s Group on Educational Policy of the national labor union of higher education teachers. One starts from the hypothesis that, by introducing a mandatory assessment, which was materialized through the promulgation of federal law (Sinaes), the spokesperson assumes a coercive discourse that the laws impose on individuals. That is source of conflicts and thus the beginning of argumentative controversial speech, which can be seen by the remarks that shows a positive ethos of the spokesperson, which in its turn is built from the ethos of the negative counterpart.
