Although the researches into relationship between school and young people have increased, we know very little about high school students in Amazon. This article presents data related to the students’ perception of the schools in a society not so familiar with the culture of literacy. It analyses school’s role, as a matrix of the ideology able to determine ways of behaving, praxis and social understandings, mainly in an oral culture context. In order to develop this theoretical argument, one carried out a research into the school socialization process of students of some public schools and students of one private school in Brazilian Amazon, Santarém local municipality, state of Pará.
