This article presents a historical point of view of the abolishment of failure in the public schools of São Paulo, before this project became a State policy in this whole system. To accomplish this aim, documents about this theme are analyzed in two different organized moments: the first one was the defense of the educational ideas occurred during the First Republic, and the second one was know as “Desenvolvimentista” period as well as its pilot implementation in the “Grupo Experimental da Lapa” (in 1960). Lastly, one reflects, in special, about the importance of the knowledge of the educational history to overcome old problems of our school.
