Abstract

This article discusses upper secondary school considering the novelty brought by Constitutional Amendment n.59, enacted on November 11th of 2009, which establishes mandatory basic education for individuals between 4 and 17 years old. It discusses issues and identifies challenges to be faced by Brazilian public schools, specially the ones that offer night shift. The study is based on the analysis of some legal documents and data from research conducted in the State of Minas Gerais, during the second half of 2003, in ten public schools that offer this level of education at night and that showed good performance indicators. The empirical data presented may contribute to the definition of policies for regular secondary school considering the specificity of the night courses.
