Resumen

This study analyzed the profile, attendance and academic performance of students who were benefited with scholarships by the Universidade para Todos Program (ProUni), at the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (Univali), from 2006 to 2007. The data collected in the academic system of the university were statistically analyzed and evaluated taking into account the current legislation. The objective of this descriptive study is to reach a diagnosis of the efficiency of the program, created by the federal government in 2005 with the purpose of granting scholarships to low-income students in undergraduate courses for non-public universities. The results, although preliminary, indicate that the program has enabled the access and permanence of those students in higher education. Moreover, they show that their academic performance is equivalent to that of the students that are not in the program.
