This work aimed at verifying the acquisition of writing skills by first cycle students, not only concerning knowledge of the Alphabetic Writing System but also the ability to produce texts. Sixty students of the same school took part in this research. The methodological procedures included two diagnostic activities: a dictation and an activity of rewriting a text. The analysis pointed out that most of the students of the three classes considered have finished the school year in the alphabetic stage of writing with reasonable domain of the graphophonic correspondences. In relation to text production, children of the first grade had a better result. These results indicate the possibility of a simultaneous appropriation of the Alphabetic Writing System and increase of literacy experiences.
