The article aims to analyze affirmative action policies in the context of the formation and historical development of the brazilian society. Thus, it seeks historical and sociological elements to better understand how the Brazilian society has historically reproduced the social, economic, cultural and political contradictions. Moreover, the article analyzes the affirmative action policies, considering them as the answer to these historic challenges and the role of the State in its formulation and implementation. It also goes deep into the resistance of society to discuss ethno-cultural and racial policies and how the affirmative action policies need to move toward structural changes, this being the condition for them to become effective and to enable the emancipation of citizens and society.
