This article features an inventory on the scientific production of themes related to elementary school education and alphabetization in 22 articles published in Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos between 1998 and 2011. Its purpose is to identify the tendencies and characteristics of these studies and their relation to the country’s social, economical and political context in those decades. The predominant theme in the educational debate was identified in the production analyzed as being a quality education as a right for all people and the processes of universalizing its access. After analyzing the articles, three large categories around which the production is organized emerged from the analysis and synthesized the privileged aspects according to their appearance in the articles: 1- the access and the quality of elementary school education and the diagnosis on educational policies; 2- alphabetization and literacy; 3- emerging themes that permeates elementary school education.
