This paper presents and discusses strategies and procedures used by children in the literacy cycle, in relation to problem situations that involve the idea of number and decimal numbering system, according to the abilities set out in the reference matrix of Provinha Brasil of Mathematics. This is a qualitative study, inspired by the educational action-research. The data collections were carried out with students from two classes of the early years of elementary school in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The data indicate that students have relative mastery over the skills involved, despite presenting difficulties in reasoning and to cope with different situations from those they are used to in the school context.

Keywords : mathematical literacy; construction of concept; representation of the number; Decimal Numbering System; Provinha Brasil..
