Resumen

SENKEVICS, Adriano Souza  y  CARVALHO, Marília Pinto de. "What would you like to be when you grow up?". Gender and schooling among working-class children. R. Bras. Est. Pedag. [online]. 2016, vol.97, n.245, pp.179-194. ISSN 2176-6681.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S2176-6681/380613879.

This article aims to understand how gender differences related to future perspectives among girls and boys can be related to the academic success of female students. Therefore, the authors followed a group of 25 children enrolled in the third grade of an elementary public school in the city of São Paulo through observations and interviews. It was noted that the girls tended to present more clearly defined professional aspirations, related to careers that require higher professional qualification and a long-term schooling process. Hence, it was concluded that, on the one hand, if these expectations contrasted with a number of restrictions experienced by the girls in their daily lives, on the other hand, they resonated positively on the commitment of the girls to their school life.

Palabras clave : school performance; gender relations; Sociology of Childhood.
