Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Helvio Frank. Male students majoring in a Languages Course: discourse performances, gender and teaching. R. Bras. Est. Pedag. [online]. 2016, vol.97, n.247, pp.552-569. ISSN 2176-6681.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S2176-6681/287336091.

We analyze and problematize discourse performances of male students majoring in Languages - Teacher Education as choice at the graduation course for professional teaching. Therefore, an interpretative and qualitative case study was conducted with seven undergraduate individuals of a public university of Goiás state. Discourses produced as from semi-structured interviews with the participants make up the material analyzed, which was subsequently discussed considering the Critical Applied Linguistics approach. Results indicate the existence of performances more heteronormative, male marked, hegemonic, essentialist and segregationist of gender discourse about men who major in Languages aiming to become teachers. Certain stigmas are historical, ideological, social, and cultural and, therefore need to be addressed at once, since the choice for a course should not be motivated only by a gender matrix.

Keywords : language teachers; gender identities; discourse performances.
