Abstract

ALVES, Maria Zenaide  and  DAYRELL, Juarez Tarcísio. Rural youth and schooling in Governador Valadares-MG: dreams and frustrations. R. Bras. Est. Pedag. [online]. 2016, vol.97, n.247, pp.602-618. ISSN 2176-6681.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S2176-6681/286435911.

This paper presents some results of an ethnographic study that analyzed the youth situation and life projects of a group of high school students. The purpose is to discuss some aspects of the educational process of these students, which live in a rural municipality of the micro region of Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais state. The analysis is based on contemporary studies of youth sociology and education. The research evidenced that reaching high school was a great achievement for this generation, with a family history of low educational level. However, the dream to go beyond come across frustrations such as poor learning conditions in rural areas, meaninglessness of the curriculum, which is inconsistent with the reality in which they live, and lack of identity of the high school.

Keywords : rural youth; education; high school.
