This article assesses a post-doctoral research on geoscience education that uses participative methodologies focused on the knowledge and recognition of local environment to promote education and social learning for geo-conservation and sustainability. It also aims at identifying the emergence of participative processes intermediated by the school of a geopark development project in São Paulo’s metropolitan area. Performed by different educational-research and public management institutions, the unprecedented initiative in teacher formation strived to perform education on the environment. It mixed different theoretical-practical activities and associated the study of geosites to the performance of different local and social stakeholders through field work and environmental mapping, world café, role playing, among others. The research related education and environment in a critical, dialogue-based, participative, and jointly responsible perspective. It aimed at developing collaborative actions to protect geoenvironmental and socio-cultural patrimonies, considering the complex local environmental degradation. Among the results, the following stand out: novel practices and methodologies for geoscience teaching; production of teaching-learning resources elaborated by educators; and collaboration of schools in environmental processes.
