Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study that analyzed the availability of teacher colleges in Santa Catarina State. It considered the need for educating high school teachers. The information was obtained from on-line data bases, found at the website of the Instituto de Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (Inep). The Anísio Teixeira Educational Research Institute]. Focusing on the year 2006, data about Santa Catarina are presented for the state as a whole and by meso-region, as well as by Institutions of Higher Education, field of study and modality. The results found 149 teaching courses throughout Santa Catarina, in 21 different institutions of higher education. The largest number of courses is in “letters” [Portuguese] with 34 (thirty four); followed by mathematics, 19 (nineteen) and physical education with 17 (seventeen). Most of the courses are at universities and in classrooms in which the professors are present. There is a significant lack of courses in the natural sciences, which was also revealed in a report of the National Education Council. An expansion in initial education in the state is recommended and in the regional study, particularly in the subjects of physics, chemistry and biology and of continued education for teachers already in the classroom.
