Based on the assumption that understanding the different forms of being and thinking the social relations throughout history, without any sort of prejudice, is essential for the human formation, the main objective of the present study is to perform an analysis of the information available in didactic books, used in the 6th and 7th grade of regular school, in what refers to medievo, especially regarding church as an institution. The aim is to reflect upon how such books have contributed to provide a better understanding on that historical period, and have contributed to the current student’s formation. Having history as guiline for understanding, and in addition, to didactic books, other primary sources and interpreters of medievo were used to carry out the study. According to our point of view, the church, which is portrayed in such books as a synonym of a tyranny that lasted throughout the Middle Ages, was the responsible for directing a society then plunged into chaos by the destruction of the Roman Empire, thus having the merit of safeguarding the knowledge that, consequently, reached the contemporary society. Therefore, it is through such relevant role, played in the first centuries of medievo, that church, as an institution, must be known.
