The text deals with the obligatory education’s increasing from eight to nine years of duration, as regulated for the Federal Law engraved by the Republic’s President in the sixth of February of 2006. First, we present the historical context in which the promulgation of the related Law was inserted. In a second moment, we analyze some documents engraved by the MEC with the objective of guiding the process of EF9A’s implantation and argue about some points of view of educators and researchers on the subject. Finally, we point some challenges to be faced by the systems of education and the Basic Education’s schools as a way to construct coherently a proposal that can, in fact, promote improvements in the quality of Brazilian’s education.
