In this paper we try to reflect on the work of schools inspectors in relation to the promotion of civic culture in Santa Catarina primary schools during the last thirty years of the First Republic. The organization of an effective school inspection service started in Vidal Ramos teaching reformation, in 1911, when inspectors acted in the sense of implementing the modern teaching method in schools and at the same time guaranteeing civic practices by articulating elements of a civic culture intended to revitalize the republican institutions. The demands of incorporating immigrants who lived in the State added a more relevant character to the inspections, from a State perspective. The study of the school inspectors’ performance allows the understanding of new aspects of the republican project of building the nation based on the civic formation of the population, which considered schools as strategic places.
