This article derived from doctoral research on Self-education of the popular classes in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro aims to present some ways in which workers of the Court and the Province of Rio de Janeiro educated each other through the workers’ press, often related to their associations. We adopt here a broader conception of education than the synonym with schooling and try to question the opposition between working-class culture and intellectual production reading and writing.
