The centrality of school as educational space in the corresponding period of the early decades of the twentieth century encouraged the creation of new instruments of measurement and classification used within the school premises were designed to meet and sort the school population, providing more ways effective propagation of certain “model” considered ideal in the process of “transformation of the child learner” (Ò, 2006). In this paper, I use the chips as a source of behavioral observation, produced under the Serviço de Ortofrenia e Higiene Mental (1934-1939), who worked in the experimental schools of Rio de Janeiro, with the chief physician Arthur Ramos. The chips are understood as an instrument that aimed to classify, enter and intervene in private matters and the individuality of the students’ lives, should compose “a portrait of the individual” and the social and family environment in which it was inserted.
