This text has the objective of analyzing the new curricular guidelines for high school. For this purpose, it carries out a bibliographical discussion as well as an analysis of regulations for basic education, and it questions which alterations the guiding principles bring for high school and what challenges this implies for school work. It develops a study regarding economical and political changes which, from 1990 onwards, have redefined education. It states that the average Brazilian education is inserted within the definitions of a broader educational policy, both requiring the promotion of education for all and reinforcing the emphasis on social exclusion. It ends the discussion by pointing out that the new guidelines require from school the understanding of educational policies for learning development, which is considered an “old” challenge.
