This article analyses the genesis of the Pedagogy Course in the State of Santa Catarina. It aims at clarifying the circumstances which encouraged the constitution of the two initial Pedagogy Courses in the decade of 1960 - at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and at the State University of Santa Catarina (Udesc). The article intends to discuss the sociopolitical context which set objective conditions for the appearance of these Courses and which defined its “practical-institutional” identity. We found evidences that the state Government grounded on the twofold education and development adopted concrete political actions that were fundamental for the appearance of Pedagogy Courses. The Course was created to respond to the needs of public high School Teachers and educational technicians in the State Educational System.
