The public systems of educational evaluation are part of the educational policies of the 1990’s and are not consensus in the education. At the same time they are positively viewed, are criticized as instruments of control of teaching autonomy. These contradictions place the school in a complex position: they must respond to government initiatives and manage the processes of acceptance and resistance. This work, based on eight focus groups, discusses these changes in Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias. It is possible to affirm that the external evaluations are extraordinary events to the school, paradoxically, have influenced the interactions in the school. There are changes in the distribution of knowledge and teaching to the test, there is also incomprehension about evaluations and educational policy.
